TOM'S VISION

I am seeking election as a school board trustee because I care deeply about the future of public education in SD62 and the wellbeing of students, families, teachers, and support staff. Our district is one of the fastest growing in British Columbia, and that growth brings both opportunities and serious challenges. I want to help ensure that decisions are student-focused, fiscally responsible, transparent, and grounded in the realities families are experiencing every day. I am a graduate of SD62, a parent of two children in SD62 and have spent many years volunteering within school PAC and District PAC Executives. I have seen firsthand how engaged families and strong public education can positively shape children’s lives.

Tom Davis is a dedicated advocate for education and community engagement. With years of experience in local governance and a commitment to children’s welfare, he is ready to bring fresh ideas and a collaborative spirit to the School Board.

PRIORITIES

The most urgent issues facing SD62 are managing rapid student population growth without compromising learning quality, addressing provincial funding shortfalls, ensuring frontline worker safety, and retaining vital support staff (CUPE) and educators (STA). We cannot expect today’s youth to thrive if our classrooms are under-resourced and our staff are burning out.

Resources

Rather than managing internal decline or forcing austerity on classrooms, the board must be a proactive advocate. SD62 continues to experience among the highest enrolment growth in British Columbia, and funding formulas need to better recognize the pressures this creates on staffing, facilities and student supports.

I will leverage my collaborative relationships with local partner and provincial groups to collectively present data-driven advocacy directly to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Infrastructure.

We must ensure the province’s funding formula accounts for the unique infrastructure and staffing strains of a high-growth district like SD62 because investing properly in education is non-negotiable.

Equity

Turning commitments to equity and anti-racism into meaningful, tangible action within our school communities is a priority. Under my leadership, SPEAC partnered with Moms Against Racism to host multiple parent information sessions focused on education, awareness, and addressing systemic bias. SPEAC also curated and distributed diversity-centred book baskets to schools across all grade levels, expanding access to inclusive literature.

Local Elders are structurally integrated into our major events—not just to conduct our opening territorial acknowledgments with dignity, but to actively join us as valued participants throughout our events. This has fostered a culture of mutual respect and genuine community connection.

If elected as trustee, I will scale these practical successes across the entire district:

Expanding Inclusive Learning Tools: I will support budget allocations that scale initiatives like our diversity book baskets, ensuring every school library and classroom in SD62 has robust, modern, and diverse resource options.
Deepening Indigenous Collaboration: I will work to deepen our structural relationships with local Nations (including the Scia'new, T'Sou-ke, and Pacheedaht), moving beyond symbolic acknowledgments to ensure Elders and Knowledge Keepers are consistently consulted and compensated for guiding our district's decolonization efforts.
Staff and Labour Support: I will collaborate directly with the STA and CUPE leadership to ensure educators and support staff have access to the resources and paid professional development necessary to sustain safe, anti-racist learning environments.

Inclusion

Ensuring that 2SLGBTQIA+ students feel safe, welcomed, and respected is a fundamental requirement for their academic and personal success. I know that a school cannot truly educate if it does not first protect.

To support 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, I will:

Defend SOGI 123 Frameworks: I will firmly uphold and protect the implementation of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) inclusive education in our schools, ensuring compliance with provincial human rights standards.
Partner with Frontline Staff: Working collaboratively with the STA, CUPE and district leadership, I will advocate for providing our teachers, education assistants, and support staff with the consistent professional development and resources they need to cultivate inclusive spaces.
Strengthen Student-Led Initiatives: I will support the maintenance and funding of Gender-Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) and ensure our physical spaces, such as gender-neutral facilities, meet the dignity and safety needs of all students.

The future must include every single person in our district, regardless of who they are or who they love. I am committed to a collaborative governance approach that leaves no person behind.
